Prosecute the Swedish road authorities!

The Swedish riders' rights organisation SMC (Sveriges MotorCyklister) wants the Road Authorities prosecuted after slippery asphalt caused the death of a rider.

The Swedish FEMA member has handed in a report of the case to the police, asking them to press charges and prosecute the national Road Authorities responsible for road construction as well as the sub contractors responsible for the actual building of that particular piece of road.

SMC describes the events that caused the accident, among other things that the road strech had previously been reported from other road users as abnormally slippery. Even the rescue vehicle that came to the scene of the accident skidded while pulling to a halt.

It had been raining, so the 50 year old motorcycle instructor and the rest of the riders kept a low speed - lower than the speed limits according to witnesses - along the highway E4. Despite this, the rider's custom bike slipped on its tyres, causing the bike to fall over and skid into the wire crash barriers, killing the rider on the scene.

SMC has put out a press release where they demand that the road authorities must meet their responsibilites when things like this happens. It seems obvious that the road strech was not up to par with normal standards as it was re-asphalted later.
