Gearing up for the races

Posted on March 7, 2010 at 7:46 AM

I've started to tinker with the SP1000 racer again. Next week the gear box is off for some de-dogging.

The gear box ready to be taken to Knut for de-dogging.

I was supposed to work hard on the Guzzi racer this winter. Strangely enough it has been a winter with a lot of riding activities and maintenance on my T5 winter steed, so the racer project had to wait a bit.

Now I've started to tinker with it again. I've changed some of the gaskets in the engine to make sure it's oil tight. Now I've readied the gear box to take it to racing wizard Knut Holte to de-dog it. He's going to help me to take off a couple of the gear shaft dogs to make gear change slicker. It makes all the difference, he says.

I've also put in order a RAM clutch from Stein-Dinse in Germany. It's a single plate clutch and weighs in at a fraction of the original clutch plate and fly wheel combo. This is also according to recommendation from Knut, Rolf and the other classic racing lunatics among the Guzzi gang. Stein-Dinse is a bit short on stock so I might have to wait a while though.

I'm waiting for the piggyback Öhlins rear shocks that was sent to Askim MC for an overhaul in October last year. As I was in no hurry I asked them for a price quote to let them tinker with the shocks during the winter. If the price was right, that is. Last week I still hadn't heard from them so I dropped by. It seems my shocks were sent to a specialist workshop. They didn't check if the price was ok with me first, so I'm anxious that it might be too expensive, in which case they'll just have to keep the shocks. Let's see what happens.

So our plan is for my wife to debut with the bike at the Classic Race at Vålerbanen in June. I need to speed up to get it sorted by then.

The tank I bought from Rolf is being readied for paiting.
